Summit County, Colorado is not only a land of mountains, but is also a place of many sources of water, including the Blue, 10 Mile and Snake Rivers.  There are also nearby Colorado whitewater river rafting classics Brown's Canyon on the Arkansas River, but also the Pumphouse run on the Upper Colorado.

The rivers in Summit County converge and make up the waters of the Dillon Reservoir, or Lake Dillon as we call it.  There are many ways to get out on the lake, including sailing, pontoons, kayak rentals, and even a scenic water taxi.  Perhaps you could ride your bike, have lunch along the way and then catch a ride back across the lake.

But the quintessential Colorado rafting trip is a float down south of Buena Vista, on the mighty Arkansas River.  A number of experienced river rats guide for local outfitter, The Adventure Company, and don't employ novice guides.  The water can be a thrill, but you want someone who knows their stuff  when you hit those rapids.  The record snow that fell this past winter fill the rivers and make for a refreshing  journey, as a Colorado river trip is like no other.  We are currently helping book trips for this outfitter, so give us a call right now at 800-213-4425 and mention this post for the river trip of a lifetime.

There are also white water kayaking options for those who are extremely adventurous and willing to get splashed in the face just a bit.  You will be able to bask in the feeling of floating with towering rock walls above your head, while you work with the river and paddle your way through the Eye of the Needle.

For those of you who know folks who'd rather cast a fly and enjoy a more peaceful, serene river experience we suggest you contact a local fly fishing guide and be grateful for whatever hole he's willing to share with you.  I bet we could even arrange to have some yummy food delivered to the Upper Blue near Breckenridge.

Behind the Breckenridge Recreation Center is the kayak park.  It is not for beginners, and is not a place to mess around.  The rivers are an amazing source of beauty, but deserve their respect, so make sure you know before you go and talk to someone who knows the local waters.

We are water people and enjoy kayaking on the lake, as it's closer to where we live in Breckenridge.  But, one day I took Dina out on the Arkansas River, and we took a swim.  But that's for another river story...
