[ How To ] Ski World-Class Mountains and Get Married in the Colorado Rocky Mountains

It's the best destination wedding ever.  No flip flops (well, you can if you really want to), but instead you see boots of shapes and sizes, some furry, some not.  Ski and snowboard gear are freshly waxed and waiting for fresh snow to fall.  The fire is crackling and everyone is holding a variety of Colorado microbrews that were handpicked just for this gathering.  If your idea of a dream wedding is snow-capped peaks, world-class skiing and lots of options for lodging, then Breckenridge and the ski resorts in Summit County are just what you're looking for.

In this image by Carl Scofield, you can see the Continental Divide stretch out in the distance.  Now look to see if you notice the two tallest peaks in the ridgeline, Grays and Torreys.  These mountains are known as "14'ers."  A 14'er is a 14000 foot peak if you didn't know.  You can see the mountains I'm talking about in the photo above, just to the right of the right ski pole, just below the cloud's left edge.

I've been up on those peaks in the summer and after summiting one peak a thunderstorm rolled in.  Lightning cracked all around us and we dropped elevation quickly.  We retreated and came down.

In the winter, you can enjoy the high mountains for extended periods without threat of lightning.  Well, most of the time.  Sometimes they shut the lifts down in April when the snow turns to rain.  But, that's a ways off yet.  There's still plenty of time for wintery weddings and apres ski moments to look forward to.  Spring can wait.
